AustinMama Writers' Guidelines

We are committed to offering a venue for local voices, so we are always looking for quality work to feature on AustinMama.  In our Mama Said section, we publish features, short fiction, book excerpts, essays and poetry written primarily by Austin talent.  Alternative, risky, thought-provoking, fringe material makes mama very happy.  Reprints are fine.  PLEASE NOTE that we know mamas think about much more than the art of raising kids -- our content definitely reflects that.  We consider Mama Said a forum to challenge, entertain and enlighten a mama, so all topics are fair game.  If you'd like to submit work for consideration, please paste it into the body of an email (no attachments, please -- mama doesn't open those), tell us a little about yourself and your work, put "mamasaid / submission" in the subject line and send it to submissions @ austinmama.com 

In our Mamas We Like section, a local mama and her work are spotlighted and praised.  Readers can nominate a potential candidate for Mamas We Like by sending an email to: mamaswelike @ austinmama.com  

Do you have to have children to submit work to AustinMama?  Absolutely not!  We believe that nurturers come in many forms, both literally and figuratively.  Nurturers grow thoughts, tend minds and help the community thrive on a variety of levels.  In essence, we consider the work of some childless women as a "mothering" of sorts -- mothering other women, mothering ideas, mothering the community -- and we'd like to think that a childless woman will find interest and value in AustinMama without feeling like she doesn't know the secret handshake.

Do you have to live in Austin to publish with AustinMama?  Again, no.  We hope to be able to feature content that is 90% Austin generated, 10% other.

We are a paying market, and prefer to work with writers who have some publishing experience and a clip or two for us to peruse. We purchase one-time publishing and archiving rights.  All other rights remain with the author.  Pay is based on the material and writer's experience -- usually between $35.00 - $50.00

Advertising/Newsletter Sponsorships

AustinMama receives thousands of visitors each week.  Our weekly newsletter reaches over fifteen hundred local, targeted subscribers each week.
